To help alleviate the traffic congestion during the
afternoon rush-hour, the State of Hawai'i Department
of Transportation begins works on June 7 to widen the
H-1 Freeway Ewa-bound to six lanes all the way to the
Pearl City off-ramp.
With the island population shifting to
Central and Leeward Oahu, approximately 226,000 vehicles
use this stretch of H-1 each day, creating a major bottleneck
in the afternoon that stretches back to Kalihi. By the
year 2022, the number of vehicles using that stretch
of H-1 is projected to increase to approximately
284,000 vehicles.
